Since its memorable launch soon after the attacks of September 2001, the Indy Folk Series has presented the best in local, regional and national talent in a uniquely suitable setting. With first-rate sound and an ambience reminiscent of folk clubs of the 1960s, acoustic artists of all genres perform at their best—and audiences are delighted.

Highlights of the 2008-2009 season include the return of folk legend Bill Staines, the Celtic fiddling of Emily Ann Thompson, and bluegrass-based innovations of the Goldmine Pickers. Two singer-songwriters—"song weaver" Amy Carol Webb and the environmentally-conscious Michael Johnathan—round out the season, along with the hard-to-categorize but widely-loved group Blueprint Music. The traditional Open Mic Night allows seasoned artists and neophytes to offer their best work on behalf of a local charity.

Indy Folk Series concerts are held in an octagonal building with original artwork lining the walls and candles illuminating the tables. The Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, 615 West 43rd Street is home to the series and co-sponsors the IFS along with Circle Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Audiences are a diverse lot, including a crew of regulars as well as those who follow specific artists or groups. Indy Folk Series concerts are family-friendly (music lovers age 12 and under get in free.) Snacks, wine and coffee are available.

The Indy Folk Series covers the gamut, from roots and bluegrass to acoustic jazz, swing and singer-songwriters. Each season brings established touring acts as well as established or emerging artists from central Indiana. Several groups have teamed up with Sonic Artistry to release albums recorded live at the Indy Folk Series.
