Appalatin Concert
This workshop is made possible by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and Noblesville Creates, our Regional Partner. What do you get when you cross traditional Appalachian folk with high-energy Latin music?
The foot-stomping, hip-swinging sounds of Appalatin, the six-member group that unites native-born, Kentucky-raised musicians with Latin emigres from Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.
Their all-acoustic performances of traditional songs feature the guitar, mandolin, upright bass, and charango, indigenous Andean flutes, hand percussion, harmonica and vocal harmonies.
Performing both original music and interpretations of traditional songs from their native regions of Kentucky, Central America, and the Andes, Appalatin seamlessly shifts between languages, styles, and vibes. From the seriously Americana-inflected “Down by the Waterside” to the upbeat acoustic Latin “La Linea”, to the outright Andean traditional tune “Alpa Mayo” and Fernando Moya’s Quechua contribution, “Ñuka Shungo,” Appalatin’s infectiously danceable tunes spring from the band’s shared love of roots music.
Based in Kentucky, Appalatin sees their mission as sharing original, folkloric and popular songs from Appalachia and Latin America and bringing a message of a fair and just world, one of hope, joy and love.
