John Bowyer and Jayme Hood are born and raised Hoosiers who make their home in South Central Indiana on the Brown/Monroe county line. Together, as The Hammer & The Hatchet, they have written and released four albums of original Midwestern Roots Music and have been refining their songwriting and musical partnership for 10 years.
John and Jayme ground their collaboration in long standing chemistry and a shared musical language. In fact, the chemistry between them is the origin story of their musical partnership. The two had been dating for a while before John heard Jayme sing, and when he did, he knew he had found his musical soul mate. “One night, we were at a jam and she just started singing harmony with me,” Bowyer recalled. “Her voice was perfect. I said, ‘You aren’t going anywhere,” and we’ve played together ever since.”
Rooted in a rural point of view and drawing from their life in the arts and trades, the duo’s songs reflect familiar landscapes and lived experience, offering a sense of recognition and relatability as audiences see their own stories woven into rich harmonies and captivating melodies. “Don’t Follow Me” conveys the perspective of a coal miner who warns his son of the perils of his work underground. “Tin Foil Rings” was inspired by the duo’s being asked to play at the wedding of friends, where a crisis of misplaced rings was resolved by impromptu, home-made replacements.
It’s heartfelt, true-to-life stories like these, told in song with guitar and mandolin work that fits perfectly alongside the duo’s gorgeous harmonies, that make an evening with The Hammer & The Hatchet an unforgettable musical experience.
The concert will be held in the performance space of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, located at 615 W. 43rd. St., Indianapolis, IN 46208 (near Butler University.) Follow these DIRECTIONS to join the fun.
