Modern folk quartet the JAES deliver what critics have called a “fiery and inventive” blend of American roots and Celtic music. Formed after a chance encounter in 2023, the four musicians bring together decades of mastery on fiddle, clawhammer banjo, guitar, mandola, concertina and cello to create a sound that is both deeply traditional and fearlessly contemporary. Their performances are marked by sublime multi-part harmonies and a groove that bridges the gap between Appalachian old-time music and Scottish balladry.
Whether tearing through a West Virginia fiddle tune or delivering an original, soul-stirring ballad, The JAES bring an infectious energy and instrumental virtuosity that leaves audiences spellbound. “Master instrumentalists with wonderful voices that blend in sublime harmonies” as one reviewer described them, their music is an exploration of the old and the new – fearless, creative, and undeniably fun.
And if you’re wondering where the group’s name comes from, it’s an acronym of the first names of its members: Janie Rothfield, Allan Carr, Ellen Coplin & Sean Hoffman. Those last two names might ring a bell (or pluck a fiddle string?) for Folks Series fans: Ellen and Sean are members of last season’s closing act, Debutants, whose tuneful romps left listeners in a state of joyous exhaustion.
